There are 38 double-sided rhythm cards in this template. The cards use quarter notes, eighth notes, quarter rests, and sixteenth notes. However, not all cards have sixteenth notes.

Here are some ways I use these cards:

1. Rhythm reading practice--simple but effective way to practice rhythms

2. Rhythm Charades

  • Assign an action to each rhythm.
    • Ex: quarter note=step, eighth notes=clap, rest=snap (or dab!), sixteenth notes=pat legs
    • Show a rhythm to students but don’t look!
    • Students then read the rhythm card using the motions and you have to guess the correct rhythm

3. King of the Mountain

  • Students sit in a circle and everyone gets a rhythm card.
  • One student is the “King” (I always make the rhythm ta ta titi ta the King, but you can do whatever you want)
  • The King always starts the round by saying “I have....” and then reads their rhythm card followed by “Who has...” and reads another rhythm card.
  • Play continues until someone messes up, isn’t following the steady beat, or does not respond when called. The player who is “out” then moves to the bottom of the mountain (either directly to the left or right of the King).
  • Everyone else moves “up” the mountain
